    1

Karnataka pacer R Vinay Kumar was, on Friday, rewarded for his consistent domestic performance as he was named in India’s 15-member squad for Twenty20 World Cup starting in the West Indies next month.

The 26-year-old Vinay Kumar, who has been impressive in the ongoing IPL, was the only new face in the squad to be led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Barring Vinay’s inclusion and the recall of Uttar Pradesh leg-spinner Chawla, there were no major surprises in the squad announced by the BCCI secretary N Srinivasan after a selection panel meeting.

Pacers Ishant Sharma, S Sreesanth and RP Singh, who were in the provisional 30-member list, failed to figure in the squad while spinners Pragyan Ojha and Amit Mishra also missed the bus.

Delhi batsman Virat Kohli, who was in the ODI squad against South Africa last month, was also left out of the squad for the event to be held in the Caribbean from April 30 to May 16. » Read the rest of the entry..

Injuries to key players, including skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, would be at the back of the senior national selectors’ mind when they sit on Friday to pick the Indian squad for Twenty20 Cricket World Cup which begins next month in the West Indies.

Dhoni and opener Gautam Gambhir were injured during the early part of the ongoing Indian Premier League while Ashish Nehra, another important member, has not played any match in the IPL for Delhi Daredevils due to a rib cage problem.

In last June’s Twenty20 World Cup in England, India’s defence for the title they won with much fanfare in 2007 in South Africa was affected because of injuries to key players Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan.

The selectors would be wary of the injuries to the key players when they meet to prune down the preliminary list of 30 players to half for the April 30-May 16 tournament in the Caribbean. » Read the rest of the entry..

  • Appoint Afridi as captain for Twenty20 World Cup: Inzamam

    0

PCB should not waste anymore time in announcing the name of experienced all-rounder Shahid Afridi as the captain for the forthcoming Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies next month, feels former skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq.

Inzamam, Pakistan’s most capped player with over 400 Test and international appearances, said Afridi is country’s best player in the shorter format of the game and has time and again proved his mettle.

“He has shown all the qualities required to be a good leader. He is the right choice to lead Pakistan in the World Cup and PCB is only creating more uncertainty by not naming him as the captain. It is creating doubts in everyone’s minds,” Inzamam said.

He said with the 15-member squad already announced for the World Cup, it makes no sense to delay appointing the captain. “We have a good T20 outfit and with good captain at the helm of affairs, we stand a fair chance to defend our title successfully,” Inzamam added. » Read the rest of the entry..
